Learn how to read is something important for your children. In this society it’s impossible to function properly if you didn’t learn to read… When their child has trouble learning how to read, many parents go into a panic. They worry that if their child does not learn how to read as fast or faster than his or her classmates, he or she will never succeed, but will be doomed to become a failure.  They will fall for any trick that anyone wants to sell them.  There are all kinds of reading systems out there that really amount to nothing but sheer quackery.  I know.  I spent years working as a tutor.  We would get parents all the time who were in a state of panic because their child could not learn how to read without extra help.  We would get them for a while until their parents would stumble across some learn to read overnight program that promised something outrageous, such as to improve their reading by three years in three weeks.  Of course, these learn to read programs would charge the parents a lot of money, without helping their children at all.  They would then come back to us, even more discouraged, and with kids who thought they were stupid, to finally start to learn how to read.  Read more »

Shyness is a real burden. Especially if you have the age when all of your friends or school mates are having the time of their life… On the other hand, shyness is not a disease and it can learn to overcome it quite easily. Would you consider yourself to be shy? This is definitely not a bad thing. For some it almost seems like an innate quality. However, I believe that much of it has to do with how a person is raised/brought up in the world. If you are constantly around charismatic, outgoing people, then you will probably pick up the personality traits. We always adopt things from our parents and family, whether we would like to admit it or not. This is just life, folks. Now, if you are one of the shy or timid ones out there, this can definitely make things a tad more difficult. When it comes to all those public activities, things can get a little scary if you don’t learn how to overcome shyness. It is always best to try to accomplish this at a young age if possible. As a teacher myself, I can be very very positive about this: whenever you have difficulties with a course like math, or when there are things you really don’t understand, don’t hesitate! Look for some additional help before it’s to late: fellow students, tutoring by teachers or qualifying experts or whatever. Just don’t lay back and be depressed about it…  I’ve never been good with numbers, so when I went off to college I deliberately chose a major that wouldn’t require a lot of intensive mathematics courses. However, I soon discovered that even as an English major, I couldn’t avoid math homework altogether. I tried to ease my burden a bit by taking the most basic classes I could get away with, but found that I still didn’t quite understand everything. A proper education and good schools cost some money. That is not a secret. You better think about it in advance, and do a college scholarship search. You don’t have to leave your home, just go searching from your home at Google… How do you plan to pay for school? Are you one of those fortunate individuals, who were told by their parents at a very young age that there was a college fund in place? Wow, that must be a great relief. I’m sure we would all love if college was paid for. No future burdens with student loan debt and credit cards. Anyway, for the rest of us that know we’re going to have to foot the college bill when it arises, what are your plans? Are you considering robbing a bank and stashing the money in an abandoned mine shaft until college time arrives. Or maybe you’re thinking that a part-time job will foot the entire cost. These are not reasonable options, just to let you know in advance. The truth is that college is expensive. If you do plan to go, why not prepare far in advance?
